September work day. Putting the garden to bed..

The weather forecast for Saturday 20th. September was not at all promising. Nevertheless, 7 brave souls turned up and they were rewarded with good weather throughout the morning.

A lot was achieved. First of all, an abundance of windfalls, mainly Sunset and Egremont Russet, were gathered. The grass was cut, weeds were removed, the blackcurrant and gooseberry bushes were pruned and the Garden was completely transformed in the space of about 3 hours.

By far the most energetic activity involved the pruning of the 2 plum trees, Laxton’s Delicious and Marjorie’s Seedling. These trees had grown too tall for the plums to be reached but also their height meant that they were casting a large shadow into the Garden itself. It was a job well done, resulting in a large, sunlit space and a crop of plums!

We are so thankful for the continued physical and financial support of our ‘Friends’ and villagers for this much-loved community garden.

Incidentally, our next Work Morning is scheduled for Saturday 21st. February 2026. Save the date!
