September work day. The last of the year..
Report on the Lydford Forest Gardens Work Morning 19th. September 2026
It’s amazing just how much can be achieved in a few hours with 9 keen people! The first job of the day was to clear the ground of apple windfalls, mainly Sunset and Spartan but also a few Egremont Russet.
There was lots of brush cutting to be done, around the outside and inside of the hedge. The grass was also removed from around the blackcurrant and gooseberry bushes, which were also pruned. Hedge cutters were also used and now the hedge looks very smart indeed.
As ever, the medlar tree was loaded with fruit and is just waiting to be harvested in due course, preferably after a frost. We originally thought that the quince tree was barren, but closer inspection revealed about a dozen specimens hiding in the leaves.
We were very fortunate with the weather as it stayed dry all the time. It was particularly encouraging to see another new face there. Naomi kindly provided sustenance in the form of tea, coffee and biscuits.
The Garden looked superb at the end of the morning!
We are so thankful for the continued physical and financial support of our ‘Friends’ and villagers for this much-loved community garden.
Incidentally, our next Work Morning is scheduled for Saturday 20th. February 2027. Save the date!
